Defense Secretary holds first Pentagon-Chinese talks. United States Defense Secretary, Chuck Hagel, faces Deja-vu in his first Pentagon meeting with his Chinese counterpart. The meeting brings tensions over U.S. Missile defenses and Chinese cyber-attacks, issues which the US Defense Secretary is all too familiar with. Chinese Defense Chief, Gen. Chang Wanquan, meets with Hagel to discuss key issues and share successes facing each nation. Hagel understands the differences between China and the United States on human rights, but also acknowledges these differences are to be addressed in a continuous and respectful dialogue, to build trust and prevent miscalculation between the parties. Several unsolved tensions still loom between the United States and China including Cyber security and the Intellectual Property theft the U.S. says is emanating from China. President Barack Obama and Chinese official, Xi Jinping, discussed the cyber security concern between the nations in which Xi claimed his country was also a victim of the cyber-attacks but did not publicly address China’s alleged activities. Gen. Wanquan also visited Hawaii to meet at U.S. Pacific Command. Navy Capt. Jeff Davis noted the visit gave a chance for the Chinese Defense Secretary and Gen. Chuck Jacoby, the commander of the Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Command, to exchange views of the ability of military officials to support civil authorities during man-made or natural disasters.
